Pakistan Bureau of Statistics has announced the results of the Pakistan Social and Living Standards Measurement (PSLM) Survey for the year 20-2019, according to which 16% of Pakistani households suffer from food insecurity.



Ac cording to the report, 67% of the people in the country have access to primary education, 47% to secondary education and 23% to upper secondary education. Even today, 32% of children between the ages of five and 16 are out of school. Sindh is the only province where the literacy rate is declining.

The Pakistan Bureau of Statistics has conducted a survey of 195,000 households in 6,500 blocks across the country with the aim of providing data for evidence-based policy making to monitor development projects at the national, provincial and district levels.


The survey provides information on health, education, housing, clean water supply, internet use, and food insecurity.





Food insecurity

According to the Food Security Survey, 84% of households in Pakistan have access to safe food. Food insecurity was reported in 16% of households, while severe food insecurity was reported in 2% of households.


Among the worst affected areas in Pakistan, Balochistan has the highest levels of acute and moderate food insecurity at 29.84 per cent, followed by Sindh at 18.45 per cent, Punjab at 15.16 per cent and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa at 12.75 per cent.


In Balochistan, moderate to severe food insecurity was recorded in Barkhan at 48.8% and the lowest at 4.59% in Gwadar. In Sindh, Kashmore recorded the highest 34.04% and Khairpur recorded the lowest 7.66%.


In Punjab, severe or moderate food insecurity was recorded at 28.81% and the lowest at 4.18% in Okara, while in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa the highest rate of food security was recorded at 32.43% in Tank and the lowest at 3.94% in Shangla. available.


Dr. Asad Ali, a nutritionist working on food security, says that food security is not about malnutrition, but about various aspects of everyday life.


Dr. Asad Ali said that malnutrition or food insecurity causes many diseases but it is not only due to malnutrition. Reasons for this include other areas of life, such as access to clean drinking water is a very important aspect.


Literacy rate

The survey report on the education sector found that 32% of school-age children between the ages of five and 16 are still out of school.


The highest percentage of out-of-school children is 47% in Balochistan and the lowest is 26% in Punjab.


The cities with the lowest rates are Rajanpur in Punjab, Thatta in Sindh, Kohistan and Bajaur districts in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, while Qila Abdullah and Ziarat in Balochistan are worst affected in the education sector.


Education facilities in these areas are much lower than in other cities in the country. Enrollments at the primary, middle and matriculation levels in the provinces are either stagnant or the school enrollment process has declined.



Educationist Dr Shahid Iqbal Kamran says that the primary function of the state is not higher education of universities but primary and secondary education which is constantly being neglected.


He said that most of the funds for education in Pakistan are spent on higher education or research in universities but if we look at the record of the last several years, there have been very few inventions in higher education due to PhDs or research. ۔


According to him, the primary and basic education sector is getting weaker and weaker. Enrollment in schools is not increasing and the number of illiterate workers is increasing.


Dr. Shahid Iqbal Kamran said that the fate of the country could change if it was made 100% by focusing on basic and primary education in the country for only 10 years.



Twelve percent of households have a computer or laptop

Overall, 12% of households have a computer or laptop, 93% have their own mobile phone and 33% of people in urban areas have access to the Internet, the report said.


Overall, 45% of people 10 years of age or older use their personal mobile phones and 19% use the Internet.


In the country, 65% of men have a mobile phone while 25% of women have their own mobile phone.


The report says that 96% of households in Pakistan use electricity for lighting. 91% use electricity supplied by companies and 5% use electricity generated from solar panels.
